The Zembik Zone Week 1 Breakdown

The Gophers went out on saturday looking for a big out of confrence win against Syracuse. It was defenitly the first game of the season. They knew it would be a fight but it turned into an all out dog fight by the end of the first overtime.

The Golden Gophers started out the game on the fast track with two quick touchdows by running back Duane Bennett and a connection between Adam Weber and Troy Stoudermire. That was about the only offense that minnesota would see for the rest of the first half. The Gophers were forced to four three-N-outs in a row. They finally caped off the first half with a first down but were down 20-14.

The second half of game would be a little better for the offense but not spectacular. Although they did not pick up any touchdowns in the second half the offense did make a couple of key drives that would put them in field goal range for the Big Ten Player of the week Eric Ellestad. A couple of those players that helped charge down the field in the second half were WR Eric Decker, WR Green and Stoudermire and running back Duane Bennet.

The Gophers would tie the game up with just seconds left in the game against the orangmen to send this one to overtime. The Orangmen got the ball first and charged down but the first year SR quarter back for syracuse threw a pick to give Minnesota the chance to win it. After a few decent runnig plays the Gophers kicker Eric Ellestad would win the game with his third field goal of the game with an ending score of 23-20.

The gophers offense played terrible. They came through when it ment the most but against better Big Ten opponents that will not fly. They showed alot of good though as well and i believe next week will be a completly different story. Offense noteables are Quarterback Adam Weber who would finish out this game 19/42 for 248 yds a touchdown and an interception. Runningback Duane Bennett with 16 carries 78yds and a touchdown. Wide Receivers Eric Decker with 9 catches for 183 yds and Troy Stoudermire with 4 catches for 22 yds and a touchdown.

The deffense however played very well. It took a little time for the gophers D to get used to the syracuse offense but once they did it was over. The Big Ten defensive player of the week Lee Cambell and OLB Lawrence Simoni let the attack against the orangmen that would end up in a low scoring 23-20 victory.

The Gophers showed alot of good and bad in this season opener. I am convinced that next week will bring forward a completly different team and another win for the Gophers against Air Force.
